Guyana: Search continues for two escaped prisoners
Police in Guyana are searching for two prisoners who escaped custody on Monday. The escapees are Keon Webster of Graham Street, Plaisance, ECD and Kareem Douglas from Albertown.
According to a police report, on Monday around 3 pm, two ranks from the Brickdam Police Station left the Georgetown Magistrate's Court escorting three remanded prisoners in a Force motor vehicle, two of whom managed to escape and are still on the run.
The three prisoners, all of whom were handcuffed, are:
- Keon Webster, a 31-year-old Bus Driver of Graham Street, Plaisance, ECD, who was charged with Simple Larceny;
- Reon Jonas, a 26-year-old of East La Penitence, Georgetown, was charged with Robbery Under Arms and
- Kareem Douglas, a 23-year-old Taxi Driver from Albertown, was charged with Simple Larceny.
Reports indicate on arrival at the Lusignan Prison on the East Coast of Demerara, one of the ranks (driver) reversed the vehicle to the entrance of the 'Reception Gate'.
He, along with the other rank, then exited the vehicle and opened the door, at which point Jonas exited the car and walked in the entrance. In contrast, the other two remanded persons (Webster and Douglas), who were previously handcuffed to each other, jumped out of the prison van and began running North towards the public road.
Webster had the handcuff hanging on the left hand.
Police and prison officers gave chase; however, the two prisoners ran West through the prison farm and split up in different directions.
An alarm was raised, and other ranks ventured out to search for the prisoners who were still at large. CCTV footage from the prison is being viewed.
The two ranks were arrested. Investigations are continuing.
