Guyana: Two teens among 5 arrested for gun possession
Police in Guyana detained a 16-year-old boy, who allegedly stole a firearm from his uncle, on Tuesday.
The Guyana Police Force (GPF) reported that the teen’s uncle, a licenced firearms holder, said on Christmas Day that his gun was stolen, and he suspected that his nephew may have stolen it.
Cops questioned the teen, and he admitted to stealing the gun and giving it to a schoolmate, also 16 years old.
Police visited the Beterverwagting, East Coast Demerara home of the other teen, and he admitted that he had the gun and led cops to a spot behind the house where he hid the firearm and six rounds of ammunition.
Both teenagers are in custody as investigations continue.
The third person was arrested on Tuesday when police searched a 26-year-old Miner on Melanie Market Road.
The man attempted to flee police when the gun and ammunition were allegedly found in his possession, but he was caught.
Hours after, another miner was arrested for possession of a firearm in the Melanie Market Road area.
Cops reported that the 31-year-old man ran away when he saw a party of officers on patrol. While running, cops said the man threw an object on the southern parapet of Melanie Market Road.
The man was taken back to the area where he threw the object and where one firearm was found.
The fifth person arrested on Tuesday was a 29-year-old businessman.
Police said they received information and went to 2J's Supermarket located at Strathspey, East Coast Demerara.
Cops searched the businessman, and they allegedly found two firearms and 15 rounds of ammo in his possession.
