Guyanese health officials wary of another COVID-19 spike
Guyana is yet to see the surge in coronavirus (COVID-19) infections associated with the new BA.2 sub-variant of omicron that is quickly spreading across Europe and parts of North America.
Despite the calm, Health Minister Dr Frank Anthony is warning Guyanese that it is crucial that they get vaccinated and their booster shots since it is the best way to prevent themselves from ending up in hospital.
“We have a more transmissible variant at a time when a lot of countries have simple measures such as masking. We are seeing many more people getting infected, and some of those people are ending up in the hospital,” Anthony stated.
“So elderly persons, who are not vaccinated, would have a challenge, and those whose vaccine would have weened after about six months would have some challenges.”
About 336,228 adults and 24,938 adolescents are fully vaccinated against COVID-19
The minister expects Guyana’s cases to a spike in the coming weeks as the new variant makes its way across the globe.
Currently, there are about 87 confirmed infections in Guyana.
The hospitalisation rate stands at eight, with two people requiring treatment in the Intensive Care Unit.
