Guyanese nurse jailed in US for stealing from elderly patient
A Guyanese national will spend the next 57 months in prison after she was convicted of stealing hundreds of thousands of dollars in US Savings Bonds from an elderly woman she was hired to care for as home health aid.
Jhanannie Singh, a 52-year-old resident of New York, was convicted yesterday in the District of Connecticut.
Court documents and statements showed that Singh stole over $200,000 from the elderly woman.
The victim had purchased the bonds for her grandchildren and other relatives.
After the victim died, Singh contacted Glen Campbell, also known as “Nick,” who enlisted the help of another individual to redeem the stolen bonds at a financial institution and provide them with a portion of the proceeds.
Undercover agents arrested Singh and Campbell on January 29, 2021, in Connecticut after they purchased $287,312.39 worth of bonds for four months from the duo.
Prosecutors said in June and July 2021, Singh attempted to obstruct the investigation and prosecution of this matter by offering to pay a witness if he agreed to lie and provide false testimony.
On August 19, 2022, Singh confessed to one count of conspiracy.
Campbell pleaded guilty to the same charge on June 15, 2022, and is awaiting sentencing.
Singh may be deported back to Guyana at the end of her prison term.
