Haiti earthquake death toll rises to 2,207
According to authorities, the death toll from Haiti's terrible earthquake earlier this month has risen to 2,207, with 344 people still missing.
The previous figure, released on Wednesday, was 2,189, while the country's Civil Protection Agency reported on Twitter that the August 14 earthquake injured 12,268 people and destroyed roughly 53,000 homes.
The rising death toll comes as relief efforts increase — Samaritan's Purse, a US-based charity organization, launched a field hospital on Saturday — but officials struggle with security at distribution points.
Gangs have stolen aid vehicles, and desperate crowds have squabbled over food packages.
Meanwhile, the damage wrought to buildings by the magnitude 7.2 earthquake meant some people in the hard-hit city of Les Cayes attended outdoor church services on Sunday.
The quake was centred on the impoverished nation’s southwestern peninsula.
