Haiti - FLASH: Haiti the most corrupt country in the Caribbean
January 25, the world ranking of the Corruption Perceptions Index 2021 (CPI 2021). The TI report shows that 86% of countries have made little or no progress over the past ten years. Transparency International finds that countries that violate civil liberties consistently score lower in the CPI. As rights and freedoms shrink and democracy weakens, authoritarianism sets in, leading to even higher levels of corruption.
After three years of regression and stagnation with 18/100, Haiti has just progressed by 2 points (score 20/100 for 2021).
Haiti, which was 168th in 2020, moves up four places globally and finds itself in 164th place (tied with Comoros, Nicaragua, Sudan, and Chad).
However, it must be remembered that Haiti in 2018 already had a score of 20/100 (before regressing) and was ranked at the time 161st out of 180 countries https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-26793-haiti-flash-haiti-2nd-most-corrupt-country-in-the-caribbean-latin-america-zone.html and 157th in 2017 https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-23641-haiti-corruption-haiti-ranked-157th-out-of-180-countries-progresses-slightly.html
This slight improvement of Haiti in the CPI 2021 results from the sustained efforts made by the Anti-Corruption Unit (ULCC) estimates Me Hans Jacques Ludwig Joseph, Director General of the ULCC recognizing "[...] It is still a bad mark which is far below our requirements and our ambitions. However, this score testifies to a new trend and to efforts aimed at strengthening State control bodies, in particular the ULCC, which, over one year, for the first time in its existence, produced ten major corruption investigation reports and seized the correctional judge against 70 political figures who did not make their declaration of assets https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-34406-haiti-corruption-ulcc-handed-70-lawsuits-against-former-mayors-and-personalities.html [...]"
Despite this slight improvement at the global level, Haiti still occupies the last place in the Caribbean as the most corrupt country. With a score of 20/100, Haiti is also found in the previous three worst-ranked countries of Latin America (Haiti 20/100 tied with Nicaragua 20/100 just before Venezuela, good last with 14/100 and 177th in the world).
The palm for the least corrupt country in the Caribbean goes to Barbados, first in the Caribbean and 29th in the world.
Our Dominican neighbours 128th in the world in 2021 with a score of 30/100 move up seven places compared to 2018.
The top 3 least corrupt countries in the world tied for first place with a score of 88/100: Denmark, Finland and New Zealand
Note that the Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI), published by Transparency International, is the most widely used corruption assessment tool globally. The CPI ranks 180 countries and territories around the world. It is based on 13 independent data sources and uses a scale of 0 to 100, with a score of zero qualifying a country with high corruption and one hundred a country with no crime.
