Haitian Government supports gang violence displaced people
On Monday, the Haitian Government confirmed that it assisted 562 people, almost a week after heavy clashes between gangs forced them to flee their residences.
Authorities admitted that hundreds of citizens were in a church sheltered near the southern exit of the Haitian capital due to the wave of violence.
The Civil Protection Directorate assured that the internally displaced people, including 69 children and five pregnant women, received food, water, and personal hygiene items.
Since last Tuesday, this area has been a feud between two of the main armed gangs in the country to control the territory.
Although images of the dead, wounded and people surviving in a public square flooded social networks, the Government had not yet pronounced itself on the climate of terror in the area that connects Port-au-Prince with the southern departments. On Sunday, interim Prime Minister Claude Joseph visited the area along with Police Director Leon Charles. He confirmed that public security restored order in the territory and reopened traffic, which had been paralyzed since early last week.
