Heavy rains cause power outages across parts of St Vincent
There are reports of power outages in various parts of St Vincent and the Grenadines following heavy rainfall from Potential Tropical Cyclone Two.
St Vincent’s Electricity Services Limited (VINLEC), in an update this morning, said its transmission network experienced considerable damage throughout the night as a result of heavy rainfall and high winds.
VINLEC said its emergency team continues to work to have the following areas re-connected:
• Top Largo Heights
• Ashburton
• Daphne-Dallaway
• Two areas in Calder
• Belmont
• Belair
• Green Hill
• Sion Hill
• Edinboro
• Queens Drive
• Lowmans Leeward to Peniston
It expects the Lowmans Leeward to Peniston communities to have electricity returned shortly.
VINLEC is also aware of smaller, more isolated areas without electricity. Work is underway to restore service.
Meanwhile, St Vincent and the Grenadines Meteorological Service, in its 72-hour outlook, says Potential Tropical Cyclone TWO will continue to dominate the weather pattern across St Vincent and the Grenadines for the remainder of the day.
Pockets of moderate to heavy showers are forecast, with ENE-ESE winds blowing at approximately 35km/- 55km/h for the rest of the day.
The flash flood watch and wind advisory remain in effect. Seas would remain rough with swells ranging between 2.5m to 4.0m. The marine warning remains in effect.
By Thursday, SVG will experience a decrease in cloud cover and a reduction in shower activity as the system tracks westward over the Southern Caribbean Sea.
Also, east north-easterly winds are forecast to decrease, blowing at 20km/h-35km/h, and sea conditions will gradually improve from Thursday (1.5m on the western coasts and 3.0m on the eastern shores).
A tropical wave would be in the vicinity around Thursday night, and showers with possible isolated thunderstorms are forecast for Friday, with instability lasting into the weekend.
In addition, a thin layer of Saharan dust haze will be visible, posing no significant threat.
