Hurricane Irma prison escapee recaptured in BVI
A prisoner who used the chaos of Hurricane Irma in 2017 to escape from jail has been recaptured.
A release from the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force said that Jose Almestica, 33, was arrested and charged yesterday, December 7, for escaping lawful custody.
Almestica escaped from Her Majesty’s Prison at Balsam Ghut in 2017 during the passage of Hurricane Irma.
He was arrested in 2016 for illegal possession of a firearm, possession of ammunition, and illegal entry. He was on remand to face charges before his escape. He had pleaded not guilty to possession of a firearm and ammunition in August 2016.
Investigations are ongoing, but the police stated. Therefore, no further information can be released at this time.
Almestica, a native of the United States Virgin Islands, was one of the three prisoners who did not return to prison after all prisoners who left the facility were ordered to return following the passage of Hurricane Irma. Santo Yamarco Hernandez, who is on remand for the murder of Alston Penn, was recaptured after he was shot during a confrontation with police in the Spring Ghut area.
However, U.S. national Kareem Hodge, who is 5 feet 6 inches tall and between 160 and 190 pounds, remains At-Large.
