Iga Swiatek and Carlos Alcaraz into Madrid open last 16 with straight-set wins
Spanish defending champion Alcaraz, who turns 20 on Friday, beat Bulgaria's Grigor Dimitrov 6-2 7-5 in the men's event.
He will face two-time champion Alexander Zverev of Germany for a place in the quarter-finals.
World number one Swiatek continued her run in the women's competition with a 6-3 6-2 victory over Bernarda Pera.
She plays Ekaterina Alexandrova in the next round after the Russians defeated China's Qinwen Zheng 5-7 6-4 6-2.
Alcaraz was briefly troubled when 31-year-old Dimitrov broke for a 4-2 lead in the second set, but the Spaniard wrapped up victory in 90 minutes, making just four unforced errors.
The world number two swept past Zverev in the 2022 Madrid final for the loss of just four games but then lost to the German in the French Open quarter-finals.
On Sunday, Zverev needed just 56 minutes to dispose of France's Hugo Grenier 6-1 6-0, including six breaks of serve and 26 winners.
"With Carlos, it will be a match-up people will look forward to," said 16th-ranked Zverev.
