Jamaica: Body of 14-year-old girl found in Rio Cobre
Local divers yesterday morning recovered the body of 14-year-old Demoya Jarrett from the Rio Cobre in St Catherine.
The teen is believed to have drowned.
It is reported that she went swimming on Monday and reportedly developed difficulties sometime after midday.
Police and Jamaica Defence Force personnel were unsuccessful in getting to the body earlier this morning.
Local divers retrieved the teen's body during a search.
Family members and residents who gathered at the scene were plunged into mourning when the body was found.
Markan Brown, one of the volunteer divers who was involved in the search for the missing teen, said the 'Dead Man Locker' section of the river is not kind to strangers. He said that section of the river is most dangerous.
"When people drown inna the river, it locks the body dem right there," said Brown.
"This river right here it nuh like strangers, and if you live here, you can't drown in it, but if you don't live here, you will drown in it," Brown added.
The community diver said that young Grant was the lone female in the company of two males, and only one of them could swim. He said that Grant and another of the youngsters got into difficulties. One was rescued by the swimmer in the group but he was unable to help Grant.
Amorel Wright, the deceased teen's mother, stood on the river bank and watched in horror as the body was fished from the water. Wright did not speak to the media, but Kedian Williams, a family friend, offered a few comments.
"When we got the news, we were in shock, and all of us joined in the search, walking the river bank, but we didn't find her," Williams told reporters.
She made an appeal for schools to be re-opened, opining that online schooling is not helping the students.
"If Moya was in school she would not find the Rio Cobre," Williams said.
