Johan Blake speaks about the impact of COVID-19 on India
Jamaican sprinting sensation Yohan Blake, who is said to be a huge fan of cricket, has expressed deep sorrow over the devastation being wrought by COVID-19 disease on India.
Blake became the latest celebrity sports star to pray for India as the world's most populous country battles a deadly second wave of coronavirus, crossing an unwanted landmark of fatalities yesterday, the Outlook Magazine reported.
Blake, who won gold and silver medals at London Olympics in 2012, once had a dream to play for West Indies. Blake had a fierce rivalry with Jamaican great and 8-time Olympic champion Usain Bolt, but with the latter retired, Blake is aiming for glory in what is expected to be his third and final Games in Tokyo this year.
In his Twitter post titled 'My letter India,' the former world champion has expressed his love for the country fighting a deadly second wave of coronavirus pandemic. The 31-year-old Jamaican has urged people to stay united and do everything possible to protect themselves.
"Want to take this time to send my love to India. I have been watching cricket over the years. I have grown to love the country so much. Wonderful people all around. I am begging everyone to please do what they can to stay safe. I know it may difficult but imagine if we work together," Yohan Blake has written.
India had the second-highest world total of 18 million COVID-19 cases, with 201,000 deaths, behind only the United States. For the first time since the beginning of the outbreak, India witnessed more than 3,000 deaths in a single day.
A day earlier, Australian compatriot Pat Cummins, former pacer Brett Lee pledged US$50,000 to help India with the purchase of oxygen supplies for the hospitals across India, Lee said in a statement on Twitter.
"My mind still stays strong; I don’t want the vaccine," Blake had earlier told the Jamaica Gleaner.
"I would rather miss the Olympics than take the vaccine. I am happy. I don’t want to get into it right now, but I have my reasons." He said.
Yohan Blake is following the IPL 2021 closely and sharing his insights on his social media platform. He has praised Virat Kohli, Sanju Samson and AB de Villiers recently while criticized Punjab Kings captain KL Rahul for making his bowlers bowl fast on a slow pitch.
