Kim Kardashian and Kanye West are calling it quits
Kim Kardashian has filed for divorce from her rapper husband Kanye West after nearly seven years of marriage.
Reality TV star Kim Kardashian has filed for divorce from rapper Kanye West after almost seven years of marriage, bringing to an end one of the world's most popular duos in entertainment with a social media following in the hundreds of millions and a number of political and big-business ventures.
The couple have been married for almost seven years and have four children together. They are among the most recognizable stars in the world and are both hugely successful in their own right. The pair were friends for years before they got together and West first appeared on her family's reality show in 2010.
Kardashian and West's first child was born in June 2013, and the couple married the following year at a 16th-century fortress in Florence, Italy, after a pre-wedding celebration held at the Palace of Versailles in France.
The couple have four children: seven-year-old daughter North, five-year-old son Saint, three-year-old daughter Chicago, and 21-month-old son Psalm.
Kim first found fame in 2007 as the star of an E! Television reality series about her family. Keeping up with the Kardashians has remained hugely popular since, with its 21st and final series due to air next year.
The reality star has found success in many other areas of business, from mobile apps to make-up, and Forbes estimates her personal wealth to be about $780m (£556m).
Known for huge international hits like Gold Digger, Kanye West has been one of the biggest names in rap music for over 15 years. The Grammy-winning musician has also found success as a fashion designer.
West, 43, has opened up about his struggles with bipolar disorder. In July last year the mercurial entertainment mogul launched a bid for the US presidency in a rambling speech in which he revealed he had wanted to abort his daughter and broke down in tears. He also posted a series of tweets, later deleted, that accused his wife and mother-in-law of trying to lock him up, and suggested he was seeking a divorce.
It would be the first divorce for West and the third for Kardashian, who rose to fame through the US reality TV series Keeping Up with the Kardashians, which followed the lives of her family members in Los Angeles.
Celebrity gossip site TMZ — which broke the news of the divorce on Friday — said the separation was "as amicable as a divorce can be".
Last year, West unsuccessfully ran for US president. During his campaign, a series of erratic public appearances and onlinepostings by the rapper sparked concern and led Kardashian to speak out.
She said her husband had bipolar disorder, was a "brilliant but complicated person" and called for greater empathy surrounding his mental health from the public and the media.
Rumours of their divorce have been around for months amid speculation Kardashian had hired well-known lawyer Laura Wasser.
The report said Kardashian was asking for joint custody of their four children.
