Little Guyana street sign in NYC stolen
There is outrage in the Guyanese community in New York after the “Little Guyana” sign was stolen in broad daylight yesterday.
The Cityline Ozone Park Civilian Patrol revealed the theft on social media as it appealed for help to find the perpetrators who took the sign from its perch on the corner of Liberty Avenue and Lefferts Boulevard.
“We are thankful for the vigilant community members who recorded the incident and gave descriptions. We have full confidence that the NYPD will bring the perpetrators to justice,” the police said.
Guyanese Foreign Secretary Robert Persaud is among the people condemning the theft of the sign, which was erected on May 29, 2021, to honour Guyanese Americans who have called a specific enclave of New York City home for many years.
"I join with the Guyanese diaspora and others in NYC in condemning this act of vandalism and an indirect attack on the community," Persaud wrote on Facebook.
New York Assemblywoman Jenifer Rajkumar, who represents the community, posted: “I condemn the outrageous theft of the historic Little Guyana Avenue sign which occurred [yesterday]. The beautiful stretch of Liberty Ave, known as Little Guyana, is a source of pride for everyone in South Queens."
Rajkumar said the NYC Department of Transportation would replace the sign soon.
