Man escapes death after assailant's gun jams in Bermuda
Gun crimes continue to be a challenge for officials in Bermuda as they seek to tackle criminal activity on the island.
On Sunday, police began an investigation into an attempted shooting around 11 pm near the junction of Court Street and Elliott Street, Pembroke.
The Bermuda Police Service (BPS) reported that the gunman approached another man, who was sitting on a motorbike.
The gunman attempted to fire his weapon, but it jammed.
The assailant escaped through a parking lot and headed towards Union Street.
Several live rounds of ammunition were recovered by the BPS when they processed the crime scene.
Police are reviewing CCTV footage of the incident.
Detective Chief Inspector Sherwin Joseph, the officer in charge of the Specialist Investigations Unit, thanked public members for reporting what could have been Bermuda’s fifth murder for 2022.
“We are thankful to the caller who alerted us to this incident. However, there were several individuals in the area when it occurred. Despite officers' efforts at the scene, no one was willing to say what they saw or assist police with their enquiries,” he said.
“Thankfully, last night’s incident did not result in injury. However, the police are not in this alone, and it will take a community effort to put an end to this kind of criminal activity which has already caused unnecessary loss of life and pain to so many families.”
Joseph is urging anyone with further information to come forward.
