Man wanted after killing his wife and step-daughter in Belize
Belize police have issued a wanted bulletin for a man who they believed stabbed to death his common-law wife and his 12-year-old stepdaughter over the last weekend and may have fled into neighbouring Guatemala with his seven-year-old biological son.
Communications Director at the Belize Police Department, Assistant Superintendent of Police Fitzroy Yearwood, said law enforcement authorities had responded to a call where they found the bodies of 33-year-old Jennifer Archilla and Nitzia Catzim.
"The mother of that child, Jeniffer Archilla, died on the spot and was pronounced dead; the daughter was seen with a large cut wound to the throat. The mother also had a large cut wound, and other stabs to the body.
"Investigation revealed she got into an argument with her common-law husband," Yearwood told reporters. Following several neighbours' interviews, police are searching for Brian Castillo, who "is now wanted for double murder".
He said that the bodies of the mother and her daughter had been taken to the morgue at San Ignacio Community Hospital, where post mortem examinations will be conducted.
The senior police officer said he could not disclose whether reports of domestic abuse had been reported to the authorities in the past, adding "it's not normal for domestic violence …to reach these levels on the first occasion".
Family members said that the killings took place on Sunday night and police said Castillo allegedly used a kitchen knife to kill Archilla and Catzim.
Media reports quoted eyewitnesses a saying that they saw Castillo driving through Arenal Village into Guatemala.
