Moderate magnitude 4.4 quake hits 59 km southwest of Ponce, Puerto Rico, early morning
A shallow magnitude 4.4 earthquake was reported early morning near Ponce, Segundo Barrio, Puerto Rico.
According to the United States Geological Survey, the quake hit on Monday, January 2nd, 2023, at 2:55 am local time at a shallow depth of 10 km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicentre, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations or as other agencies issue their reports.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake, which listed the quake at magnitude 4.4 as well. Other agencies reporting the same earthquake include the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) at magnitude 4.4 and The Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology (IRIS) at magnitude 4.4.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused significant damage but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the epicentre area.
Weak shaking might have been felt in La Parguera (pop. 1,100), located 29 km from the epicentre, Pole Ojea (pop. 1,800) 30 km away, Boqueron (pop. 2,000) 35 km away, Maria Antonia (pop. 1,500) 36 km away, Palomas (pop. 2,300) 40 km away, Lluveras (pop. 2,000) 41 km away, Sabana Eneas (pop. 1,800) 41 km away, and Puerto Real (pop. 6,200) 41 km away.
Other towns or cities near the epicentre where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Ponce (pop. 152,600), located 59 km from the epicenter.
