Molnupiravir approved for use in Guyana
The Food and Drug Administration in Guyana has approved a license to import and use the anti-viral pill, Molnupiravir, to treat coronavirus (COVID-19).
“About a month ago, we had an application in Guyana for the use of Molnupiravir. The Food and Drug Administration here would have granted to that local importing agency the right to import and to use Molnupiravir,” Health Minister Dr Frank Anthony said during his daily COVID-19 update.
Anthony said his ministry would be working with the importer to purchase doses of Molnupiravir to be used in the public health system.
Molnupiravir was developed by US-based pharmaceutical giants Merck and Ridgeback Biotherapeutics to threaten COVID-19 last year. Studies have shown that the drug can reduce an infected person’s chances of becoming seriously ill.
The World Health Organisation recently approved Molnupiravir for its COVID-19 treatment protocols.
The pill must be taken in 800 mg doses every 12 hours for five days.
It is not recommended for children and pregnant and breastfeeding women.
