Monifa and Jubba head to Magnum Top Performa grand final
Sixteen competitors were whittled down to six finalists last Friday during the Magnum Top Performa Road Show held at Romeich HQ in Kingston.
Ryz, Monifa, Jubba, Intellect, Kustiks, and Trisstar made it to the top six based on votes via the Magnumhub.tv platform. However, it was the decision of the judges—Shukkle Bus and Romeich Major—and the crowd response that effectively decided their fate.
Ryz and Intellect were later eliminated, while Monifa, Jubba, Kustiks, and Hanover-based Trisstar moved into the top four.
Later, Monifa and Jubba battled for the top two spots and will head to the grand finale for a chance to win $1.5 million cash and a spot on the Reggae Sumfest stage, among other prizes.
Trisstar, who won $500,000 for finishing in the second runner-up position for the women, gave props to the competition for the exposure she received.
“I feel extremely grateful, and I am proud of myself. I went on the stage and forgot some of my lyrics because I wrote the song this morning. I don’t think I gave it my very best, mi coulda do better,” she told Loop News shortly after being eliminated.
She added: “I feel good to represent my parish of Hanover. I entered Magnum Top Performa because I love music; music is where I express myself. The journey was amazing, and I plan to improve my stage performance.”
Seaview Gardens-based Ryz, who made the top six, said he plans to capitalise on the platform that he got from participating in the competition.
“We a go forward with the dream. Music has been a passion for me, so I put all of my passion into this. The exposure I received was immeasurable. We got to go all over the place where we built our fan base and the experience of performing on a stage,” he said.
Intellect said the reason he entered was to enhance his performance skills.
“I decided to enter because I think it would be a good experience as well as to enhance my performance on a whole. It was a great journey, I learnt a lot, and it built my confidence a bit more,” said Intellect.
He added, “I am elated to make it to the top six, but I am a bit disappointed in not making it to the finals.”
Intellect said he has an EP to release and singles.
“The journey was a tedious one but fun. I learnt a lot, and mi rate the whole thing because it have a vibe. What stood out most for me were the competitors. Them have a whole heap a talent,” said Kustiks, who finished as the second runner-up for the men.
Kustiks, who won $500,000, said he plans to invest the money into his career.
Former Digicel Rising Stars alum Monifa is excited about going into the finals.
“I’ve always been a singer, but to explore this other side of me, it simply was amazing,” said Monifa.
Her reason for entering Magnum Top Performa was to pay tribute to her mother, who passed away a few months ago.
“My mom was my biggest supporter, and she passed away a few months ago. I just know that she would’ve wanted me to step out. This is dedicated to my mother,” she reasoned.
Portmore-based Jubba, who will square off with Monifa at the finals, described the competition as a great experience.
"Mi love everything weh Magnum a do. It has been a great experience. For me, the highlight was when we did the roadshow in Linstead. The crowd went wild,” he disclosed.
Dancehall artiste and Magnum brand ambassador Laa Lee closed the proceedings with a high-energy performance laced with some of his recent hits.
The final of the competition is set for Friday in Montego Bay.
