Mystery as man's body found without a head on T&T beach
Police have launched an investigation into the mystery of a body found without a head on Monday.
The body was found on Monday afternoon off Toco beach in the Caribbean island nation of Trinidad and Tobago, according to reporters.
The body was spotted floating in the water at around 4 p.m. by two people fishing from the beach.
The body was retrieved after a man swam out to sea and tied a length of rope to it. When they reached the body they discovered that the corpse was headless.
A District Medical Officer investigating the discovery ordered that the body be taken to the Sangre Grande Mortuary to find out the cause of death.
The body was that of a man of slim build with a light brown complexion, according to police.
The body also had a tattoo with the name Leonora Isabel on his back. The man was also wearing burgundy underwear with blue jeans, according to Trinidad and Tobago reporters.
Police are asking for anyone with information to contact the police. Authorities did not say if they had come to any conclusions about the identity of the body.
Police from the Homicide Bureau of Investigations Region II will be continuing their inquiries.
Reporters have contacted the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service for comment.
Trinidad and Tobago, a group of islands that lie just off the coast of South America, close to Venezuela, is a wealthy country thanks to its oil and gas riches.
Trinidad and Tobago police dealt with an incident in January when a woman's body was found on a beach.
On January 26, the body of Vanna Girod, 30, was found on the beach in Arnos Vale, Tobago, according to Trinidad and Tobago reporters.
Girod, a model, singer, and actress, had been reported missing the previous day after going for a walk in Arnos Vale and failing to return to her aunt's villa where she was staying.
An autopsy, carried out at the Scarborough mortuary in Tobago, found that Girod had died from drowning. Investigators said they had found no information to suggest foul play, according to a Trinidad and Tobago Guardian report.
During the search, Girod's clothes, track pants, and a sweater were found neatly folded and placed along a trail. Girod lived in Maraval on the island of Trinidad with relatives and had gone to Tobago to spend time with her aunt.
