New curfews have been imposed on many islands in the Bahamas
To help combat the rapid surge in new COVID-19 cases, Prime Minister Dr Hubert Minnis announced last night to extend curfews for several islands.
“I wish to note that the curfews will be strictly enforced and that enforcement is being increased,” Minnis said.
As of Wednesday, New Providence and Grand Bahama will be on a 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. curfew, and mainland Exuma and mainland Abaco will be on a 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. curfew.
The current 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. curfew for North and South Eleuthera, including Harbour Island, will remain the same.
Minnis said the extended curfew would be implemented “to help combat the spread of the virus”.
This is the second change to curfews on New Providence and Grand Bahama in less than a month.
The recent changes to the curfews come amid a recent spike in COVID-19 cases nationwide.
More than 2,100 cases were reported last month. Eight hundred and seventy-four cases have already been reported this month.
On July 23, Minister of Health Reward Wells announced that the curfews for the two islands had changed from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.
New Providence’s curfew, before the announcement, was 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. and Grand Bahama’s curfew was midnight to 5 a.m.
