NFL star DK Metcalf clocks 10.37 in 100m
The wide receiver, 23, was hoping to secure a place at the United States Olympic trials but came last in his heat. He said he was "just happy" to be able to compete with "world-class athletes".Metcalf finished 15th overall from 17, with American Craven Gillespie winning the final in 9.96. Great Britain's CJ Ujah was fourth in 10.03 as he clocked the Olympic qualifying standard with his fastest time in the event since 2017.
One of the fastest players in the NFL, Seattle Seahawks' Metcalf recorded a top speed of 22.64mph last season when he chased down Budda Baker for a 90-yard interception. The 6ft 3in, 100kg star needed to run 10.05 seconds or faster to automatically qualify for the trials or finish as one of the next fastest in a sanctioned athletics event.
Metcalf started strongly but faded in the final 20 metres."To test my speed up against world-class athletes, just having the opportunity to run against these guys was a blessing," Metcalf said.” They do this for a living. This is very different from football speed."
