Nigerian who stabbed Guyana presidential guard remanded on attempted murder charge
The Nigerian national who stabbed a Guyanese presidential guard and was involved in a shootout outside the State House last month was remanded on Thursday after appearing in court accused of attempted murder.
When he went before Chief Magistrate Ann Mc Lennan, 25-year-old Bethel Chimezie was not required to plea to the indictable charges of unlawfully and maliciously wounding Constable Telon Perreira with intent to commit murder and discharging a loaded firearm with intent to maim, disfigure and cause grievous bodily harm on December 15, 2022.
Chimezie, who had a bandage around his right leg and had to be assisted into and out of the court, was denied bail and remanded until January 26, 2023.
The prosecutor told the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court that on the day of the incident, the Nigerian national went to the guard hut at President Irfaan Ali’s official residence and said he had an appointment with the Head of State.
He was asked to sit but became agitated and tried to go through the gatewayConstable Perreira blocked him. Chimezie allegedly pulled a knife from his bag and stabbed him repeatedly.
A female presidential guard intervened, and according to the prosecutor, Chimezie grabbed her service revolver and discharged the weapon when other members of the presidential guard intervened. He was pursued and eventually shot in the leg.
Both Chimezie and Perreira required surgery for their injuries at the Georgetown Public Hospital.
The presidential guard was discharged on December 29, while the Nigerian, who was questioned by investigators and had a psychiatric evaluation, was released into the custody of police on Monday.
