PM Davis: Venezuela must respect Guyana's sovereignty and borders
The Bahamas has supported Guyana in its territorial dispute with Venezuela.
Prime Minister Philip Davis said Venezuela has no right to claim Guyana’s Essequibo region as the boundaries were settled in accordance with the 1899 arbitral award.
“The Bahamas demands that Venezuela respect the settled borders and abide by the 1 December 2023 ruling of the International Court of Justice and to refrain from any actions that would disturb these existing borders,” Davis said.
“I am disheartened that after all that CARICOM has done to protect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela during a most trying economic and political period in its history, Venezuela should now seek to annex territory in a CARICOM state.”
Venezuela seeks to control the region, which accounts for approximately two-thirds of Guyana’s internationally recognised territory.
The region is rich in resources such as minerals, oil and gas.
