Police responds to robbery in progress, 2 die following alleged shootout with police
Two suspected thieves were killed during an alleged shootout with police officers in San Juan on Wednesday afternoon. One man was detained and is assisting police in their investigations.
One of the deceased was identified as Akeem Benjamin of Burke Terrace, Barataria while the other is yet to be identified.
According to a police report, at about 12.20 pm members of North Eastern Division Task Force 02 including PC Ball, PC Andrews, WPC Leiba responded to men on the premises of a businessplace and assistance needed from PC Isaac and party of officers assigned to the Barataria CID.
On arrival the officers saw a man jumping a fence on the western side of the building. The task force officers drove towards El Socorro area making checks but the suspect was not seen on returning to the compound.
PC Andrews then saw two men on looking in the direction of the oncoming marked police vehicle started running in a westerly direction and together with PC Ball gave chase. Both men ran into a room on the western side of the building and on entering the two officers saw firearms pointed at them. The officers seeing that their lives were threatened drew their service weapons and fired several rounds in the direction of the two suspects.
As the suspects fell to the ground the officers recovered and seized two firearms - one pistol and one revolver. The two wounded suspects were taken to the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex for medical treatment, however, the suspects succumbed to their injuries. Also visiting the scene was ASP Parriman, Insp Bharath and Sgt Martin. Also, police said, officers of the Barataria CID held another man on the compound. That suspect, police said, is from John John in Port-of-Spain.
