Popular Jamaican dancehall producer charged with scamming
Dancehall producer Papi Don was arrested and charged in Florida after police alleged that he scammed over $300,000 from at least 18 elderly residents all over the US.
Papi Don, a Montego Bay native, started producing Dancehall music in 2017. His Papi Don Muziq label is best known for working with artists such as TeeJay (Up Top), Chronic Law(Pain), Gage (Motivation), Shaneil Muir(Yamabella), and Takeova (Alien Mode).
The owner of the label, ‘Papi Don Musiq’, Donte Johnson, has been charged with criminal use of personal identification, bank fraud, and grand theft of a firearm.
The 25-year-old hitmaker was taken into custody on Wednesday after being accused of running an elaborate scam operation in the state.
Detectives began their investigation in October when family members of the 88-year-old filed a report with the sheriff’s office. The victim believed he was paying taxes for Publishers Clearing House winnings in advance and deposited $63,000 into two separate bank accounts.
With the help of surveillance video, detectives investigating the case identified Johnson, 25, as the suspect who reportedly used the victim’s identity to withdraw money.
While executing a search warrant on Johnson’s home, detectives allegedly discovered more than US$17,000 in cash, a stolen firearm, and several electronic devices.
The dancehall producer was arrested and faces charges of criminal use of personal identification and bank fraud. The Broward County Sheriff’s Office also charged him with grand theft of a firearm.
Detectives believe Johnson stole more than $300,000 from 17 victims across the country.
