Power restoration exercise almost complete on Turks & Caicos Islands
There are just a few pockets of the Turks and Caicos Islands that remain without electricity following the passage of Hurricane Fiona.
FortisTCI said 98.3 per cent of customers across the territory have electricity.
Providenciales, South Caicos, North Caicos and Salt Cay are entirely restored.
On Grand Turk, which received some of the most substantial impacts from Hurricane Fiona, FortisTCI said 90.6 per cent of customers are back on the grid.
“Restoration of service to some sections of the islands has taken longer due to the complexity of the repair. FortisTCI crews continue to be supported by power line technicians from our sister companies in the Fortis Group to help accelerate the process,” the company said.
The power restoration effort on Middle Caicos remains at 55 per cent.
FortisTCI explained: “Portions of the overhead distribution line on the causeway that connects Middle Caicos to North Caicos and the Providenciales grid received significant damage.”
“Other parts of the Middle Caicos network were also damaged. As a result, sections of the network must be rebuilt to restore service to the settlements of Bambarra and Lorimers. Flooding in some areas also hampered restoration. Crews have been working to connect customers in these settlements to the grid via Conch Bar, while the damaged areas of the network are rebuilt.”
