President Bolsonaro calls off visit to Guyana after mom’s death
Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro was forced to cancel his trip to Guyana after his mother unexpectedly passed away early this morning.
Olinda Bonturi Bolsonaro was 94 years old. She was married to Percy Geraldo Bolsonaro, who died in 1995, and they had seven children – Jair is the third.
In a tweet, the president said: “With regret, [I announce] the passing of my dear mother. May God welcome you in his infinite goodness.”
This development puts a pause on efforts by Guyana, Brazil, and Suriname to develop an energy and trade alliance.
Yesterday, leaders from the three countries met in the Surinamese capital Paramaribo for a working lunch.
Bolsonaro and Surinamese President Chandrikapersad Santokhi held a further round of bilateral talks on areas such as oil and gas exploration, infrastructure and national security.”
Following the discussion, Bolsonaro said it was his pleasure to visit Suriname, which he described as “a brotherly and friendly country”.
