Prime Minister Timothy Harris hints at serving a 3rd term as Prime Minister
The People’s Labour Party (PLP), part of St. Kitts and Nevis government trio party, Unity, held their convention on Saturday 27th March 2021. It was a well-attended event.
Prime Minister, Hon. Dr. Timothy Harris leads the youngest political party in the Caribbean and boasted proudly of its success over the past 6 years. Prime Minister Harris is currently serving his second term as Prime Minister of the Federation.
Guest speaker at the convention Dr. Sharon McNicol-GoPaul is a political leader, author, psychologist, and consultant. Dr. McNicol-GoPaul lauded Prime Minister Harris for the work he has done over the years. She spoke of his character and tenacity and urged the people of St. Kitts and Nevis to give him a 3rd term as Prime Minister of the Federation. “PM Dr. Hon. Timothy Harris has been a leader who has not only saved lives and livelihoods in St. Kitts and Nevis but in the Caribbean. His leadership has been exemplary and the standard throughout the Caribbean. His consideration of the 3rd term as a leader must not be about him and his principled stance, but it must be about what the nation and the people want and need!” Dr. McNicol-GoPaul stated.
However, Dr. McNicol-GoPaul’s words contradict those uttered by the Prime Minister at the end of his first term. Upon winning the June 5, 2020 election Prime Minister Harris stated locally and regionally that his intention was only to serve two terms.
"I only intend to serve two terms in the office of Prime Minister," he added, reiterating his promise from his 2015 campaign. "We shall make the modern history for St Kitts and Nevis by making it the best-managed island country," said Prime Minister Harris. He added that any leader that chooses to serve more than two terms is a dictator.
The words of his guest speaker Dr. McNicol-GoPaul, leave to question whether the Prime Minister of St. Kitts and Nevis, Hon. Dr. Timothy Harris has had a change of heart. The People’s Labour Party is the youngest party in the Federation, but its growing support remains steady.
