Puerto Rican Rapper Ankhal Seriously Injured in Shooting While in Car
Puerto Rican musician Ankhal is reportedly in serious condition after suffering "multiple" gunshot wounds in a Tuesday night shooting in Fajardo, Puerto Rico.
Ankhal, 21, whose real name is Anthony Khalil Mercado Diaz, was shot while in a car with two other people. He and Jose De Leon, 25, were taken to a local hospital and later transferred to another facility, where they reportedly went into surgery due to the severity of their injuries. The driver was reportedly uninjured.
The car with the three men inside was approached and shot at by two "masked individuals," the director of the Criminal Investigation Corps (CIC) of Fajardo, Joaquín de la Cruz Santiago, told Puerto Rican newspaper El Nuevo Dia The CIC said they do not yet have a motive, and that the investigation is ongoing as they work to determine whether there were any witnesses or security cameras in the area that may provide evidence.
Ankhal started as a freestyle rapper at the age of 17 who gained popularity in Puerto Rico before releasing a single "Antijudas" which gained over 300,000 plays on SoundCloud, according to, carbon fiber music the label that signed him in September 2019. He later released a single called "CFM Ganga Remix" with Farruko, another popular Puerto Rican artist represented by Carbon Fiber Music, that gained over 2 million views on YouTube within the first 48 hours and currently has more than 5.7 million views.
The rapper has nearly 1 million monthly listeners on Spotify. His 2020 single "Perreo Intenso" with Farruko and another Puerto Rican rapper, Guaynaa, has over 32 million streams.
Farruko Posted a photo of himself and Ankhal on Instagram on Wednesday and wrote, in Spanish, "I have always seen you as my son with love and respect I have not stopped praying for you since I found out what happened to you I thank God that you are still alive."
"I even feel guilty because I opened the doors to fame for you and even though I did it with good intentions, not everyone knows how to handle this," he added.
Police seized a gray Lexus from the scene as part of their investigation, which Hola News reported was the car Ankhal and the other men were in when they were attacked.
