Puerto Rico tightens its entry rules for travelers: here's what you need to know

Puerto Rico has tightened its entry rules for domestic travellers, as the spread of the Omicron variant has seen rising cases of COVID-19 both in the US and around the world.

Domestic travel guidelines now include testing.

While vaccinated travellers on domestic flights could previously enter the US territory without a negative test result, the island will now require all visitors to have one. The new rule came into effect on December 27, meaning passengers must show a negative COVID-19 PCR or antigen test result taken 48 hours before their arrival time.

What travellers international travellers will need

For travellers arriving on international flights, non-US citizens have been required since early December to show proof of vaccination and a negative test result taken within one day of travel to the US.

Mandates for unvaccinated travellers

Puerto Rico will require all unvaccinated travellers to quarantine for seven days after their arrival – even if they’ve tested negative for COVID-19.

Any travellers who arrive without a test result will have 48 hours to take one upon arrival or be subject to a fine of $300.
