Reopening of schools in Antigua postponed by one week
Antigua and Barbuda students will return to school on September 13, a week later than scheduled.
Cabinet members met with the Ministry of Education and the Teachers Union yesterday and decided to postpone the reopening of schools.
The cabinet said the postponement would allow teachers, ministry officials, and parents to consult on matters such as the vaccination of students and staff.
About 62 percent of Antigua and Barbuda’s public school teachers are vaccinated against COVID-19, and the government said this number is heading towards 80 percent.
All teachers in private schools are vaccinated, the cabinet note said.
Almost 8,000 students 12 and older are eligible to be vaccinated against COVID-19.
Before a face-to-face school can begin, the government hopes to vaccinate all eligible students.
