Residents protest against vaccinations in Linden, Guyana
Residents of Linden came out in their numbers today in support of health care workers in Guyana who are being affected by the government’s vaccination policy.
According to reports, healthcare and frontline workers who turned out to work this morning were prevented from entering the Mackenize Hospital (Linden Hospital Complex). They were said to be unvaccinated.
One health care worker who chose to remain anonymous says it is a disheartening situation related to humanity. She says the nurses are not against vaccination but must be given their right to choose.
Several government departments and agencies in Guyana require staff members to get vaccinated or be forced to produce a weekly COVID-19 test negative result at their own cost.
This angered Linden residents, who decided to block the Mackenzie-Wismar Bridge in protest. Residents chanted, “The gate close... the bridge close,” “All ah we are Linden people... open the gate let the nurses go in.”
Across the Caribbean, there have been several anti-vaccination protests, mainly surrounding mandatory vaccination for COVID-19.
As of August 10 in Guyana, 271,122 persons have been administered their first vaccine dose, and 144,965 persons have received their second dose.
