Road traffic collisions decline in Bermuda

Bermuda’s roadways are slowly becoming safer for motorists and pedestrians as police have reported a significant reduction in collisions.
The Bermuda Police Service (BPS) has been cracking down on unruly motorists through its Operation Vega initiative.
Statistics released by the BPS today showed a significant decline in collisions since January 1.
During the first quarter of 2022, there were 243 collisions compared to 306 in 2021 and 257 in 2020.
Chief Inspector Robert Cardwell of the Tactical Support Division commented: “We can now report that Operation Vega appears to have taken hold of collision statistics.”
“We reported a reduction in collisions by as many as 100 in the 4th quarter of 2021 compared to the 4th quarter of the previous three years.”
Cardwell admitted that increased enforcement is not the only way to make the roads safer. He noted the BPS is working with the Bermuda Road Safety Council to improve education.
Speed continues to be the leading cause of accidents in Bermuda and traffic violations.
“We are saddened that we have been forced to put more energy into traffic enforcement to reverse collision trends. In the last two weeks, 353 moving violation tickets were issued and 36 motorist advice notices (warnings). For the duration of Operation Vega, 4,448 traffic offenders have been put before the courts to be dealt with for traffic offences,” he said.
Cardwell appealed to motorists to drive their vehicles safely.
