Sint Maarten closes schools due to inclement weather
Schools across Sint Maarten are closed today (August 21) due to the inclement weather experienced on the Dutch Caribbean Island.
Minister of Education, Culture, Youth and Sports (MECYS) Rodolphe Samuel, in a statement, said: “On behalf of the Government of Sint Maarten, after consultation with the Meteorological Office of Sint Maarten, kindly take note of the following.
“Given the developments regarding the current inclement weather and the saturation experienced, especially with the flooding of roads on Sunday, August 20, 2023, which is forecasted to continue through Sunday evening and possibly Monday morning, you are hereby notified that All schools will be closed on Monday, August 21, 2023.
“The situation will be monitored, and if an extension is deemed necessary, you will be informed accordingly.”
A flood advisory issued over the weekend is in effect until further notice.
Meanwhile, the Meteorological Department monitors Tropical Storm Gert, which has formed east of Sint Maarten.
It says lingering moisture associated with the outer bands of Tropical Storm Franklin as well as the proximity of recently formed Tropical Storm Gert, will continue to cause cloudy periods, isolated to scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms across the local region.
Some of these showers may be heavy and could lead to street flooding and rockslides.
