SKN Govt says all nationals are safe after Taiwan earthquake
St Kitts and Nevis Government say its citizens in Taiwan “are all safe” after a powerful earthquake struck the southeastern area of the Asian country on Sunday.
The 6.8 magnitude earthquake derailed train carriages, trapping hundreds of people on mountain roads. The earthquake came just hours after a magnitude 6.4 tremor hit the same area on Saturday night.
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Education Dr Geoffery Hanley, in a statement posted on his Social media page, said, “after learning of an earthquake that sent panic through Taiwan on Saturday and Sunday, I immediately asked God to protect the Taiwanese people and our citizens there.
“Without hesitation, I reached out to His Excellency Donya Francis, who stated, “With God’s Blessings, we are all safe,” he said, adding that “many of our citizens here in the Federation were understandably concerned and extremely nervous, but by God’s Grace, we are thankful for His Mercy.
“We continue to ask God to cover our students pursuing their studies abroad, and we especially pray for the safety and well-being of all of our nationals and students currently in Taiwan. Your …government is with you,” he wrote.
Several St Kitts and Nevis citizens are pursuing studies in Taiwan, 11 of whom recently received scholarships to advance their education there.
St Kitts and Nevis are a handful of Caribbean Community (CARICOM) countries with diplomatic relations with Taiwan, which China considers to be a renegade province.
