SKN Labour to host annual conference; country waits for election date
The main opposition St Kitts-Nevis Labour Party (SKNLP) Friday announced that it would be holding its annual meeting on Sunday as the twin-island Federation awaits the announcement of the election date from Prime Minister Dr Timothy Harris.
The SKNLP said that the conference will be under the theme “A New Day. A Better Way with Labour” and that the party “is in campaign mode for the next general election, which will be held in a few weeks”.
The SKNLP, which has lost the last two general elections here to Harris led Team Unity government, said an “Empowerment Rally has been added to the conference, which brings together the members, leadership and supporters … in a day of celebration as the SKNLP presses forward to the next general election”.
Harris was forced to dissolve the Parliament after members of his coalition government submitted a motion of no confidence against him. He later fired several ministers, including his deputy prime minister Shawn Richards, who was also the leader of the People’s Action Movement (PAM) that had been one of the three parties in the coalition.
Harris, who heads the people’s Labour Party (PLP), also dismissed Nevis Premier Mark Brantley, the leader of the Concerned Citizens Movement (CCM) in Nevis, another coalition partner.
In its statement, the SKNLP said that this year’s conference is also exceptional coming as it does in the 90th year since our party’s founding and given the transition to new leadership.
It said Sunday’s conference also allows the party to reflect on how far it has come and strategise and plan how it can build on the gains acquired over the years.
Newly-elected Dr Terrance Drew will deliver his first conference message as a political leader, with the keynote address provided by Shawn Edwards, St Lucia’s Minister of Education, Sustainable Development, Science, Technology and Vocational Training.
