St. Kitts and Nevis records its first COVID-19 death
As of today Thursday, June 17, 2021, St. Kitts and Nevis recorded its first death due to the COVID-19 virus since the start of the pandemic.
The Federation has recorded an additional 28 positive cases, which brings the total number of active cases to 208 within the past 4 weeks according to Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Hazel Laws. Twelve (12) persons have been hospitalized over the past 4 weeks. However, 7 were released recently.
The Minister of Health, Hon. Akilah Byron-Nisbett stated at the country’s Ministry of Health & National Security Press Conference today that there is a cluster outbreak at the national prison. She added that the prison has been closed to visitors since the start of the pandemic last year. The positive inmates have been isolated and testing continues for the other inmates.
The Caribbean Alert has been informed that the rise in cases has left the designated quarantine sites full to capacity and the government has now resorted to the last-minute transformation of other government buildings into quarantine areas.
St. Kitts and Nevis are currently under the State of Emergency which has placed the twin-islands on partial lockdown with restricted movement between 5:01am and 5:59 pm and full lockdown between 6:00 pm and 5:00 am. Essential businesses including banks, supermarkets, and drug stores are allowed to open within a designated time frame and persons are asked to continue to practice the required COVID-19 protocols.
