St Kitts police investigating false report of fire at electoral office
Tensions have heightened to a fever pitch in Saint Kitts mere hours before citizens are scheduled to go to the polls.
Saint Kitts and Nevis Labour Party candidate for constituency #3 Konris Maynard said he was driving by the electoral office on Central Street when he observed fire and army officials in the vicinity.
Noticing this, Maynard said he started a life and approached to investigate. During the life, he claimed to have been manhandled by a police officer at the scene.
Dozens of angry SKNLP supporters hurried to the electoral office and were accused of impeding the progress of electoral staff attempting to prepare for tomorrow's election.
According to preliminary reports, members of the Fire and Rescue Services responded to calls informing them of a fire or suspicion of fire at the electoral office.
Upon arrival, they quickly ascertained that there was no fire in the office or the vicinity.
When reporters arrived on the scene, some SKNLP supporters could be heard hurling insults and accusations.
"Harris trying to force a state of emergency," one man said. "But he aint getting through with that; I have to vote tomorrow."
Another man said: "The old pig is getting desperate; everybody better vote Labour tomorrow."
Speaking anonymously, one woman told Loop Caribbean: "This wouldn't end nicely; I hear two flights with people coming to vote weren't allowed to land. I don't know if it’s true, but there are so many rumours and they...the people are fed up and angry."
Another Labour supporter could be heard urging his comrades to vacate the area.
"Don't give them what they want," he said. "They want a reason to arrest you, leave, go back to the meeting or go home."
