St Vincent PM Ralph Gonsalves Receives Cuba’s Highest Award
Prime Minister of St Vincent and the Grenadines, Dr Ralph Gonsalves, was awarded the Order of José Marti from the Government of the Republic of Cuba.
This is Cuba’s highest National Award named after the Cuban National Hero, who became the symbol of Cuba’s struggle for Independence.
The award was presented to him last week by President Miguel Díaz-Canel.
Gonsalves said the Award of Cuba’s highest honour bestowed to him upon him is dedicated to the youth of St Vincent and the Grenadines.
Gonsalves, while speaking with the Agency for Public Information (API), said: “It is extremely humbling... I dedicated it, especially to the young people of the Caribbean, of St Vincent and the Grenadines who seek to follow in the tradition and ideas and ideals of the Cuban Patriot, Jose Marti.”
While adding that it was a very emotional experience, Gonsalves said, “he also received it on behalf of the people of the Caribbean, St Vincent and the Grenadines and all the comrades and all the people who I have struggled and interacted with over the last 53 years of my active political life.”
The award was bestowed on May 26, the same day which marked the 30th anniversary of Diplomatic relations between St Vincent and the Grenadines and Cuba.
Gonsalves travelled to Cuba with a delegation last week to attend the ALBA Summit.
