Suspect in USVI’s second murder arrested
A 30-year-old man, who was wanted in connection with the second murder on the US Virgin Islands for 2023, has turned himself over to police.
Steven Phillip, Chief of Police for St Thomas/St John/Water Island District, confirmed the development.
Phillip said their investigation into the death of Delroy Venzen on January 19, 2023, at Coki Point Beach led to information that Shamal Gabriel was allegedly connected with his murder.
The police chief said Gabriel handed himself over to officers at the Richard N Callwood Command on January 23.
Gabriel was charged with crimes including first-degree murder, using a dangerous weapon during a crime of violence, reckless endangerment and unauthorised possession of firearm ammunition.
He was processed and turned over to the Bureau of Corrections, pending Advise of Rights Hearing.
Phillip thanked community members for their continued assistance in bringing criminals to justice.
With Carnival festivities set to take place in St Thomas and St John in the coming months, Phillip is calling on islanders to take steps to keep communities and streets safe.
“Enough is enough,” Phillip said as he noted the police do all in their power to keep the streets safe.
