SVG: Water for Christmas! 30 homes in Bequia receive running water
The gift of running water in the taps of at least 30 more homes in Bequia has been made possible this Christmas.
The island of Bequia, pronounced (Bek-way), is the largest of the 32 islands and cays that make up the central state of St Vincent and the Grenadines.
Action Bequia (AB), a non-profit organization, says for those who may not be aware, there is no central water supply to homes on Bequia. Residents rely on De Rains and guttering to collect water into tanks.
Action Bequia says its 'Our Water for Homes' work continues in 2022 to support other residents who have met the critical needs requirements.
This program was made possible by financial support from the Coastal Communities Foundation of South Carolina via its long-term partner, The Community Foundation for SVG (CSFVG).
The AB team, headed up by Project Manager Shea Hazell, manages the installation of what's needed: guttering, foundations, The Black Tank, and plumbing to the house.
In May of this year, Action Bequia received a grant of US$150,000 to fund an effort to provide water supplies to Bequia homes that are the neediest.
This involves building a concrete base, then installing water tanks and the necessary gutters and pipes to get the rainwater from roofs into and out of those tanks.
