The tourism partnership between Guyana and Barbados is in the works
About 6,000 Guyanese will be sent to Barbados over the next few years to receive world-class training in the tourism industry as part of a new agreement between the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) neighbours.
This was revealed by President Dr Mohammed Irfaan Ali today as he gave a breakdown of achievements made during his series of international trips.
Earlier this month, Ali held bilateral talks with Barbadian Prime Minister Mia Mottley and President Kenyatta of Kenya on the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development Meeting, which was hosted in Bridgetown.
The training of Guyanese hospitality professionals will be just the start of their joint tourism efforts, the president stated.
Guyana and Barbados agreed to exchange 45 minutes of airtime per week for promoting each other’s tourism products to potential local customers.
“We agreed on working out the mechanism for the twinning of our tourism product, for the joint marketing of our tourism product, and to promote Guyana and Barbados as a common destination,” he said.
Additionally, a gold market will be established to make Barbados’ cruise port more attractive and increase revenue for Guyana’s gold miners.
A high-level team from Guyana and Barbados has met in recent weeks to iron out Bajan and Guyanese collaboration in oil and gas, agriculture, forestry, and transport and logistics.
Ali noted that both he and Mottley are committed to ensuring that these efforts go beyond the talking stage and result in tangible projects beneficial to both nations.
