Tourist fined for bullet in the Bahamas
An American tourist yesterday paid a $500 fine to avoid spending two months in prison after she pleaded guilty to possession of ammunition.
Jamilla Kennyatta Thomas, 33, was arrested at Lynden Pindling International Airport on May 29 before she boarded her return flight to Glendale, California, after a round of 9mm ammunition was found in her luggage.
She pleaded guilty to possession of ammunition at her arraignment before Magistrate Samuel McKinney. Thomas has a firearms permit for a 9mm pistol; however, she surrendered the weapon a few months before her arrest.
Thomas came to New Providence to stand in her sister’s wedding. She said she was unaware that the single round of ammunition was in her luggage.
According to Thomas, her ex-boyfriend had also used the bag.
Alphonso Lewis represented Thomas, and Inspector Timothy Bain was prosecuted.
