T&T and Korea strengthen bilateral relations
Trinidad and Tobago and Korea have moved to strengthen and deepen bilateral relations following a meeting on December 2nd, between Choi Jong Kun, Korea’s Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs, and Reita Toussaint, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign and CARICOM Affairs of Trinidad and Tobago.
The meeting occurred while Permanent Secretary Toussaint was on a visit to Korea to participate in the 11th High-Level Forum on the Korea-Caribbean Partnership—the first face-to-face high-level diplomatic activity between Korea and the Caribbean region since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic.
An official statement issued by the Embassy of the Republic of Korea reports that during the meeting, Vice Minister Choi and Permanent Secretary Toussaint discussed issues of mutual interest, including bilateral relations, substantive cooperation, and Korea-Caribbean cooperation.
One of the key outcomes of their discussion is a commitment to expand substantive cooperation in various areas such as public health, digital transition, culture, and arts, which is expected to redound to the benefit of businesses in both countries.
According to the release from the Korean Embassy, “Vice Minister Choi conveyed willingness for future cooperation with Trinidad and Tobago, which is one of Korea’s key partner countries in the Caribbean Community (CARICOM). Furthermore, he suggested strengthening cooperation in various areas, including industrial innovation and digital agriculture”, given that 2022 marks the 60th anniversary of the independence of Trinidad and Tobago.
Meanwhile, Permanent Secretary Toussaint expressed hope the two governments would “promote exchanges and cooperation between enterprises and other private sectors of both countries, through intergovernmental cooperation in the fields of public health, welfare, agriculture, and public security, so that Korea’s advanced digital technology and policy experience can be shared with Trinidad and Tobago.”
