T&T Opposition Leader mourns children killed in Mahdia dorm fire
Trinidadian Opposition Leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar has sent condolences to the family of the children killed in last evening’s dormitory fire in Mahdia, Guyana.
In a statement today, Persad-Bissessar said she was “deeply saddened” by the tragedy that claimed the lives of 18 girls and one boy.
“As a parent myself, I can only imagine the pain and grief that the families of these children are feeling. My thoughts are with you during this difficult time, and I pray that you find the strength and courage to face the days ahead,” Persad-Bissessar said. “I wish to express my deepest condolences to the families who have lost their loved ones and the entire nation of Guyana. The people of Trinidad and Tobago stand together with our neighbours in Guyana during this challenging day.”
Twenty-one children were rescued from the burning building, receiving treatment at hospitals in Mahdia Georgetown's capital city.
The Guyanese Government has launched a “full-scale medical emergency action plan” to assist the children.
Fire officers have also begun investigating what caused the deadly blaze.
