T&T: Police stop girl from jumping off Parkade
Police officers are being commended for rescuing a 14-year-old girl who was reportedly considering jumping from the top of the Parkade on Richmond Street, Port-of-Spain, yesterday.
According to reports, passers-by saw the teenager leaning over the top of the building around 2.40 pm. After numerous attempts by those looking on for her to come down, she did not heed.
A TTPS release said acting Cpl George and PCs Andrews and Nanan, from the Northern Eastern Division Task Force, were proceeding along Edward Street when on reaching the Parkade, they were told by persons of a female standing on the ledge of the upper floor of the carpark.
The officers made their way to the top floor of the building, where they saw a girl sitting on a railing overlooking the street. The minor was being spoken to by two concerned citizens attempting to lure her away from the ledge.
PC Andrews cautiously took over those attempts, assuring the girl that her life held value and would be given any help she needed to overcome whatever situation she faced. As he kept her attention on him, Cpl George cautiously approached her from behind and was able to grab hold of her and bring her to safety.
She was taken to the Central Police Station on St Vincent Street, interviewed and taken for medical treatment.
The release said the Social Work Unit was contacted to provide counselling for both the minor and her mother.
