T&T: Six-year-old boy dies after being taken to hospital with bruised body
Police are investigating the circumstances under which a six-year-old boy died after being taken to the Port-of-Spain General Hospital unresponsive late Tuesday.
The female relative and her companion who took the boy to the facility have been taken into police custody and, up to late last night, remained detained for questioning about the incident.
The child has been identified as Zakariah Charles of Apartment 3, Building 25, Old St Joseph Road, East Dry River, Port-of-Spain. He was taken by the female relative to the Accident and Emergency (A&E) Department of the hospital, where he was eventually pronounced dead.
According to a police report, the relative told police that the boy was sent to take a bath around 7 pm, after which relatives heard a loud noise.
When they checked on the boy, they found him on the bathroom floor in an unconscious state.
Doctors at the A&E attempted to resuscitate Zakariah, but he was dead at 8.37 pm.
Police were notified, and a team of officers led by Cpl Dennis and WPC Henry responded. Police said the doctors noticed bruises on the boy’s body.
An autopsy has since been ordered to determine the cause of death.
Zakariah’s biological father, at the Forensic Science Centre in St James yesterday, declined to speak to media members.
Most of the neighbours at the apartment building yesterday said they couldn’t comment on the matter as they did not know much about what had happened.
“I only hear about that, but I know nothing. I never even see the child and the parents or whoever. We don’t know what went on if anything at all. All I hear is the child dead,” one tenant said.
Investigating police officers alleged that the couple, after giving their initial report on the matter, had not been cooperating with investigators.
Officers of the Besson Street police station are continuing inquiries. (With reporting by Rhondor Dowlat-Rostant)
