Two Jamaican men were charged for smuggling drugs into The Bahamas
Two Jamaican men appeared in a Bahamas Magistrate's Court on Friday and pleaded guilty to drug-related crimes.
Charges against the men, Damond Osmond Shawn, 44, and Daniel Grant, 24, included possession of dangerous drugs with intent to distribute and conspiracy to possess dangerous drugs.
In addition, the two were accused of conspiring to smuggle harmful medications.
According to prosecutors, the men were involved in a conspiracy to import many deadly substances into the Bahamas from August 12 to August 18.
According to police reports, on August 18, a team of officers acting on information proceeded to an apartment where they found both men.
During a search of the home, a plastic bag containing seven taped packages was found in the kitchen area. The officers then found additional packages in other rooms of the house.
The police then confiscated US$4,490 from Shawn.
In court on Friday, the Jamaicans, both of whom are in the country illegally, asked Magistrate Samuel McKinney for leniency.
Shawn said he was trying to make money for his family, while Grant said he had a three-year-old daughter.
The Magistrate issued the men a custodial sentence of two years, a fine of US$30,000, or one year in jail if the fine is not paid.
The remaining three counts carry 18 months each. The sentences are to run concurrently.
