Two men accused of smuggling cocaine worth $1.3 million, Bahamas
A pilot and a man accused of smuggling $1.3 million in cocaine into the country will appear in court today for a bail hearing.
Anton Johnson, 59, of Bahama Sound, George Town, Exuma, and John Hanna, 27, of Dignity Gardens, were arrested on June 13 after a plane piloted by Johnson landed in Staniel Cay, Exuma.
Johnson and Hanna appeared before Chief Magistrate Joyann Ferguson-Pratt charged with possession of dangerous drugs with intent to supply, importation of dangerous drugs; conspiracy to possess dangerous drugs with intent to supply; and conspiracy to import dangerous drugs.
According to police, the operations team saw a white and blue twin-engine Piper Aztec plane flying at low altitude over Steventon, Exuma. The law enforcement officers allegedly saw when the men jettisoned two crocus sacks that collectively contained 58 kilos of cocaine. They were arrested upon landing.
They pleaded not guilty. The prosecutor Sergeant 3605, Samantha Miah, asked for time to consider her position on bail, as she didn’t have time to review the file.
The men were arrested as part of a multiagency interdiction exercise that involved the DEA, DEU, and the US Coast Guard.
